(aka; Iris tectorum 'Variegata') We are pleased to once again offer the true Iris tectorum 'Ikeda Sunbeam', which is hopelessly confused in the trade with the tender Iris japonica 'Variegata'. Iris tectorum 'Ikeda Sunbeam' was brought to the US from Japan in 1975 by plantsman Barry Yinger. This selection of roof iris makes a slowly enlarging clump of 10" long leaves, which emerge heavily striped with white and green. As the temperatures heat up, the variegation fades to all green. The clumps are topped in early May (NC) with lovely 18" tall spikes of light lavender flowers. Iris tectorum 'Ikeda Sunbeam' is easy to grow in regular garden soils...not too wet, not too dry.
