From Illinois south to Florida, you could be lucky enough to happen on a clump of the copper iris. Lucky if you are hiking through wet grasslands or near bog edges and don't find the accompanying reptiles. We've saved you the trouble and excitement by propagating this wonderful native iris. The flowering stalks emerge from the narrow foliage and extend upward to 4-5' tall, topped in early May (NC) with 3" coppery orange flat-petalled flowers. A clump of copper iris in flower is truly a sight to behold. This is easy to grow, especially if your soil is moist.
