Iris ensata 'Lion King' is one seriously tricked out Japanese Iris. This 1996 introduction from the work of Bob Bauer and John Coble is a 40" tall deciduous clumper, topped, starting for us in early June, with stunning 7-8" wide double flowers, composed of 6 falls, each of which has wide violet borders and pure white centers. Iris 'Lion King' is a winner of the American Iris Society Award of Merit in 2001, and the Payne Medal in 2003. Wet-to-moist soils are best, but all Iris ensatas will also tolerate typical garden conditions.
