(syn: H. hemerocallidea) How could you not like a plant called Ape's Arm Pits? This South African plant-primate, native to moist sites, has been a fabulous curiosity addition to our garden, where it has thrived on neglect. In shape it resembles a short, downward arching daylily that has spent far too much time weightlifting in the gym. The 1" bright yellow flowers occur in the leaf axils from early summer until frost. H. rooperi is best planted in a special position where it can be appreciated for its uniqueness.
