(patent expired 6.15.2021)(syn: H. 'Malja') Over the years, we've seen many variegated seedlings, but there is finally one has a stable pattern. In 1989, South Africa's Jacques Malan grew seed, purchased as miniature hybrid daylilies. One was variegated and stable, resulting in a dwarf daylily with dramatic foliage...green leaves with a wide, creamy white border. We really don't care if it ever flowers, but just the same, the 1' tall clump is adorned with single orange flowers in late spring, reminiscent of H. dumortieri. The plant was first introduced in 1994 in South Africa as H. 'Golden Zebra', but later was improperly changed to H. 'Malja' and then incorrectly accepted by the US Patent Office. (Please buy those folks a copy of The International Code of Nomenclature.) We've found this to need rich soil and full sun to perform its best.
