This rare collection (WM #11.2) of the deciduous species H. atrorubens is from a Will McLewin expedition into East Slovenia. This particular population, which has since been destroyed by road construction, had flowers that were much redder than the typical purple associated with this species. With H. atrorubens, the flowers emerge on 1' stalks in late winter before the foliage emerges. The H. orientalis-like foliage often emerges with a tint of purple in the new leaves.
