(aka: Ligularia tussilaginea 'Argentea') Farfugium japonicum 'Argentum' is considered the most beautiful and prized member of the genus farfugium. The large glossy green leaves to 8" round are bordered with a wide, but variable, creamy white edge that often streaks into the middle of the leaf. Clumps of Farfugium 'Argentum' are topped with yellow daisy-like flowers on 30" stalks in October and November. Slightly moist, but well-drained organic soils give the best results.
I bought five of these plants from a local nursery over ten years ago where they have grown in a part shade location at my front door in Coastal South Carolina (zone 8b). Visitors ...view moreoften ask what they are and where they can get one. Good luck! They are very difficult to find and I am thrilled that Plant Delights is offering them again. I bought three more last fall from Plant Delights and they are doing very well. These plants are slow growing. They don't like to be over-fertilized. They can get fungus / black spots in the spring if you over water when nights are cool. I have tried to grow new plants from seed with absolutely NO luck. Other farfugium reseed like crazy in my yard, but not this one. The blooms are not interesting, just like with other farfugium. It's the foliage that makes these plants a show stopper. If you live in an area like I do where you can't grow Hosta, these are a nice substitute. Plus, my herd of local, ravenous deer leave them alone, just like all other farfugium. view less
