(coll. #A6NC-002) In 1999, we first collected E. compositifolium just south of Aberdeen, NC, along a dry and dusty dirt road. We had seen populations for several miles but were particularly struck by the dark red stems on several individuals. After rooting cuttings, we trialed the plant for 6 years, becoming more impressed each season. The 4' tall, narrow, vertical red stalks are clothed with fragrant, cutleaf green foliage. In late September and October, the tops of the stalks burst into flower like a tan feather duster. We have not seen any seedlings in our trial garden but when grown in an area with other clones, expect babies.
