This collection of the bizarre southeast native coral bean is from a pasture in Arcadia, Texas...the birthplace of Texas horticulture guru Greg Grant. This strange legume emerges in mid-May with 2-3' tall slightly spiny green stalks, topped with wildly beautiful 1' flowering panicles that resemble bright red lipsticks glued to a stem. Just as flowering ends, the trifoliate medium green leaves emerge. For best hardiness in marginal zones, do not cut the branches back until late spring... may take several years to mature enough to flower well.
