Looking more like a shiny steam-rolled green agave, the tough perennial Eryngium agavifolium makes a dramatic, bold-textured, semi-evergreen rosette to 8" tall x 2' wide. In late spring, the 48" tall stalks top the rosette, ending in small, green, thistle-like flowers that mature in fall to a lovely brown. Grow Eryngium agavifolium more for the dramatic foliage instead of the interesting, but not overly showy flowers...unless you cut them for indoor arrangements. Eryngium agavifolium tolerates very dry to slightly moist soils, as long as they have plenty of sun...great in mass plantings!
