Echinocactus texensis, which hails from the southwestern states of Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico, is one of our favorite winter-hardy cacti. In shape, Echinocactus texensis resembles a solitary upside-down bowl of petrified blue-green Jell-O...eventually to 1' wide. The long, arching spines resemble those fake fingernails you usually only see on clerks at fast food drive-ins. In May and June (NC), Echinocactus texensis is topped with a cluster of lovely pink daisy-like flowers highlighted by darker red centers. Horse crippler cactus is a very easy cactus to grow, although good winter drainage is very important in wetter climates.
