One of the very first patented perennials (patent now expired) is this superb selection of the native bleeding heart, D. eximia, from the late Marie Sperka of Woodland Gardens in Crivitz, Wisconsin. Decades after its introduction, this is still the standard by which all other bleeding hearts are measured. The lacy, light-green foliage forms a nice mound to 2' across. Beginning in early spring, the 18" spikes of lovely dark pink flowers emerge to top the clump. Flowering for us continues throughout the summer, unlike D. spectabilis, which goes summer dormant.
