Dasylirion gentryi is a recently named sotol from southern Sonora, Mexico, where it grows between 3,500' and 4,000' elevation. Unlike many sotols, Dasylirion gentryi grows in seasonally moist conditions, so it tolerates irrigated garden soils quite well. In appearance, Dasylirion gentryi looks similar to but slightly more open than Dasylirion wheeleri, forming a symmetrical clump to 4' tall x 5' wide, composed of green, slightly twisted, spiny, evergreen leaves. The 9' tall flower spikes are amazing...thousands of tightly clustered tiny flowers that emerge tan, but age to a stunning russet red. Dasylirion gentryi has thrived in the gardens here at Juniper Level since 2003.
