(aka: Helianthemum carolinianum) We are pleased to share our 2024 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of the little-known, floriferous native (East Texas to NC), Crocanthemum carolinianum 'Goldtender'. Our original 1998 seed collection from a mowed highway right-of-way in NC's Pender County, has been a star in our dry, full-sun gravel rock garden for the last few decades. For us, flowering begins in late March, and continues through most of the summer. The deciduous small patches of Carolina Rockrose produce two types of flowers, cleistogamous (which never open and are self-fertile) and chasmogamous flowers which are open. It loves to spread around via seed, if conditions are right. In the wild, the lack of wildfires have caused populations to greatly diminish, as plant competition shades it out. If you like golden yellow flowers and virtually unknown Southeast US natives, you're sure to love Carolina Rockrose.
