(aka: Caryopteris ELSTI-01) Caryopteris 'Blue Empire' is the new standard in grey-leafed false blue spirea. This incredibly vigorous giant reaches 6' tall x 7' wide in our trials. This gem was originally discovered as an open pollinated seedling from Caryopteris 'First Choice' in 2011, by Holland's Fransiscus Johannes Christiaan Elst. The woody stems are clothed with narrow, fragrant silvery green leaves and cymes of large violet blue flowers from August into October. Caryopteris x clandonensis typically is a poor performer in our hot, humid summers, so this is a notable exception.
