Bergeranthus vespertinus has been an amazing specimen in our dryland rock garden, surviving 11F so far, without a blink. Hailing from South Africa's Eastern Cape region, the fleshy green, succulent, fingernail-shaped leaves form a 2" tall x 1' wide tight patch. Starting for us in early April and continuing for several months, the mat is topped with a plethora of 2" yellow daisies, each held on short stalks that rise 2" above the foliage. The epithet "vespertinus" indicates that the flowers close in the evening. It is essential that it is sited where it will be dry in the cold winter months.
