This wonderful hardy begonia from China's Mt. Emei was collected by Dan Hinkley in 1998 and has proven amazingly hardy in our cold wet winters. The thick rhizome gives rise to large, razor-stubble covered, green leaves on 1' petioles. In early fall, the leaf base swells like when an alien invades a human body. Before long, the swollen base begins to grow new plants from the leaf warts. Each 4' wide clump is adorned, starting in October, with short sprays of large bright pink flowers emerging from the rhizome.
