(syn: B. australis var. minor) If you have only grown B. australis, then you've missed one of the best members of the genus. This little-known cousin is actually a superior B. australis look-alike. Take a B. australis, shrink the leaves and plant to about half size, attach an 18-24" flower spike atop the clump, which is loaded with blue-lavender flowers from mid-April until early May, and you have B. minor. In the summer, the enormous black pods add garden interest as they cling to the sturdy old flower spikes. This offering was grown from seed from our wild collection, just west of Blue Ridge, TX.
