We grow lots of baptisia seed each year and this Baptisia leucophaea seedling stood out from all the rest after years of trials. We consequently named and introduced it in 2008. The early-emerging Baptisia 'Butterball' makes a compact 18" tall x 2' wide deer-resistant clump of glaucous foliage, adorned with obscenely large and floriferous pendulous spikes of creamy yellow flowers starting in early April (in NC). Baptisia leucophaea cuttings aren't the easiest things to root, so the supply of plants is very limited.
