(syn: Kalimeris yomena) Aster yomena 'Shogun' is a delightful, easy-to-grow, deciduous perennial (we made up the common name) that hails from Japan and South Korea, where it grows in fields and forest edges. The plants emerge in spring with stunning yellow edges on the cut-leaf foliage, that eventually ages to green. The moderately spreading habit (to 6' wide in 3 years in good soil) mingles well in the border. In early fall, the plants are topped with 1" light lavender aster-like flowers on 1' tall stems. In addition to its ornamental value, the young foliage is cooked as a vegetable in its native haunts. Medicinally, it's used to treat insect bites as well as coughs and asthma.
