(syn: Symphyotrichum concolor) This bizarre little East Coast native aster is often seen growing in fields and rocky banks...tough as nails. The felty very narrow leaves get smaller as the stalks get taller...hmmm. In fall, the purple aster flowers are borne in the leaf axils, similar to a toad lily. Each 1' wide clump can reach 2-3' in height.
