For decades we've experimented with plants that weren't supposed to be winter hardy, and one of our favorite groups is the asparagus ferns. We're pleased to share a form of the common hanging basket favorite Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri' that has survived for over a decade in our NC garden. Asparagus densiflorus 'Hardy Sprengeri' is a seed strain we grew from wild-collected South African seed via Silverhill Seed. In the garden, Asparagus densiflorus 'Hardy Sprengeri' makes a lovely, textural, green groundcover that forms a 3' wide x 18" tall clump of 2' long, arching stems, each clothed in softly-stiff, green, needle-like foliage. In summer, the small but wonderful fragrant white flowers appear just before the red berries.
