Aquilegia desertorum is a wonderful Southwest native (Arizona, New Mexico) columbine that's rarely seen in the rest of the country. These dainty-looking plants are actually tough as nails. The disected foliage clothes the upright 2' tall stalks, topped, starting for us in early April with a superb show of scarlet orange flowers with yellow centers...definitely not for the pink garden enthusiast. In our trials, they have proven far more adaptable and long-lived than its East coast counterpart, Aquilegia canadensis.
