This subspecies of A. utahensis occurs in the southern Mohave Desert, CA, where it can be found growing on limestone outcrops between 4,000' and 6,000'. A. utahensis ssp. nevadensis forms a small, slow growing rosette of 15" long, grey blue foliage. As the plant ages, the spines on the end of the leaf become quite large and pronounced... can you pronounce SPINES? This is an incredibly hardy species as long as the crown remains dry when temperatures dip below 20 degrees F.
