Adonis amurensis 'Sandanzaki' may not sound enticing, but anything named after the Greek vegetation god is probably worth pursuing. This highly-prized selection of the Asian winter-flowering woodland ephemeral shows nature's creativity at its finest. Starting its growth for us in late January, the frilly fern-like foliage springs from the ground, followed close behind by 6" tall stalks of 2" wide flowers. The flowers open to first reveal a double row of yellow petals, followed several days later by a frilly green collar that unfurls inside the petals. Next comes another row of yellow petals, and finally a small frilly green central cone. We recommend planting Adonis 'Sandanzaki' where you can closely watch the amazing floral evolution. Eventually, Adonis 'Sandanzaki' forms a 1' wide patch when grown in a slightly moist woodland site...at which time, you'll be able to share with your really good gardening friends. As best we can figure, Sandanzaki translates to "you need to secure lots of money." All adonis are usually summer-dormant by June, so be sure to mark the planting spot to prevent unwanted summer spading circumcisions.
