More Information About Adonis
The genus Adonis contains 30 species of charming buttercup relatives from the forests and grassy slopes of Europe and Asia, and named after the Greek god of vegetation. Adonis species are generally small woodland perennials with yellow or white flowers and many feature finely dissected, fern-like foliage. Japanese gardeners adore adonis and have bred cultivars of orange flowers, too.
Adonis has been cultivated for hundreds of years in Asia. One Adonis flower in particular, Adonis amurensis, is popular as a potted plant that blooms in February during the Japanese New Year period. Adonis prefers well-drained soil with plenty of compost. In summer, adonis prefers part sun, but likes full sun during winter...plant it under a deciduous tree to provide this type of light. Like many woodland plants, adonis roots do not like to completely dry out. Because of their similar bloom time and growing requirements, gardeners can enjoy adonis planted with helleborus or hosta.
