More Information About Yushania

The genus Yushania is a collection of roughly 80 species, many of which were formerly assigned to Fargesia, Arundinaria or Sinarundinaria. The genus name Yushania commemorates the Yushan Mountain range in Taiwan, but the genus as a whole is distributed from the Phillipines and Taiwan west through China (home to the most species), Southeast Asia, India, and all the way to Africa.

Yushania species are pachymorphs, which is a botanist's way of saying they are clumping, rather than running bamboos. Some Yushania species form tight clumps and others are "semi-runners" whose long-necked rhizomes allow them to be invasive in certain favorable (warm) environments. The Yushania for sale here at PDN will always be the clumping varieties.
