More Information About Woodsia

The genus Woodsia contains 30 species that are spread around the world in temperate regions of the northern hemisphere and in high altitude locations in the tropics. Every US state is home to at least one native Woodsia species. Because woodsia species hybridize frequently in the wild, many hybrids occur where their habitats overlap.

Many woodsia species live as lithophytes on cliffside rocks, thus the common name, cliff fern. Woodsia ferns are generally small, usually around 6" tall. As you might expect from its cliffside habitat, woodsia plants like more sun than most ferns. The plants can take full sun in the morning but need some shade in the afternoon. Woodsia plants also prefer well-drained soils and regular watering. Try combining woodsia ferns with other small plants such as cyclamen, ipheion, and biarum in a part sun rock garden.
