More Information About Stipa
The genus Stipa is a large genus of 100-200 species of grass native to the prairies and steppes of Eurasia and northern Africa. The genus Stipa was much larger, but many species were split off into their own genera in the 1990s (e.g. nassella). Here at Plant Delights Nursery, we are interested primarily in ornamental stipa species but members of the genus stipa are also important for grassland management, forage, and for making paper and crafts.
Members of the genus Stipa generally prefer prairie conditions...full or part sun and well-drained soil. Stipa is a fine textured grass that looks great as a specimen, in a container, mixed border, or massed on a hillside. In summer and fall stipa plants produce wispy seed heads that dance in the wind.
