More Information About Stachys

Stachys is a very large genus of herbaceous and woody plants in the mint family, containing at least 300 species. One species in particular is quite well-known to gardeners, Stachys byzantia...the ubiquitous lamb's ear. There are other species in the genus stachys that have garden merit, and we strive to bring them to you. Stachys coccinea is one such plant. It is a US native (Arizona to Texas) with red, butterfly-attracting flowers that grows to about 1.5' tall.

Stachys plants are drought-tolerant and are not palatable to deer either, an added bonus. Try combining stachys with other hummingbird plants like buddleia and salvia to make a hummingbird all-you-can-drink nectar buffet.
