Polypodium is a fairly large genus of about 100 deer-resistant ferns with a worldwide distribution. The genus is named for the foot-like appearance of the rhizomes (Polypodium = "many feet"). Polypodium ferns are generally quite short and deciduous. Candy lovers might be interested to know that some Polypodium roots are intensely sweet with a slight licorice flavor. Polypodium roots have been used in Europe since Roman times as a flavoring agent for nougat and licorice candy.
