More Information About Polypodium
Polypodium is a fairly large genus of about 100 deer-resistant ferns with a worldwide distribution. The genus is named for the foot-like appearance of the rhizomes (Polypodium = "many feet"). Polypodium ferns are generally quite short and deciduous. Candy lovers might be interested to know that some Polypodium roots are intensely sweet with a slight licorice flavor. Polypodium roots have been used in Europe since Roman times as a flavoring agent for nougat and licorice candy.
Like most garden ferns, Polypodium prefers a woodland habitat consisting of partial shade and well-drained but moist soil. Polypodium is generally a fern genus for cooler locales (northern US and continental Europe) but we have assembled a collection that includes ferns with good heat and humidity tolerance.
