More Information About Onosma
Onosma is a genus of 150 species of perennials that grow in rocky soil from the Mediterranean to the Himalayas. The common name, golden drop, suggests that all onosma flowers are yellow. Many are, but there are also blue-, pink- and white-flowered onosma species. Regardless of the color, Onosma flowers are easy to identify. The flowers appear in summer, are generally tubular in shape, and clustered together on short stalks above the usually hairy foliage of the onosma plant.
Onosma prefers sunny sites and rich well-drained soil, especially in winter when root rot is a potential problem. If winter moisture can be controlled, onosma is an easy-to-grow rock garden plant that pairs well with other small plants such as sedum, scutellaria, and delosperma.
