More Information About Night Gardens
Here at Plant Delights Nursery, we have an enormous on-line plant catalog and have searched through it to create this mini-catalog of night garden plants that look or smell great when the sun goes down.
Often, night gardens are designed with supplemental lighting that is used to highlight a tree and create interesting shadows. If you design your garden sans electric lights, it may also be called a moon garden.
Night gardens have a long history of use in Asia as far back as the 1600s. The Japanese liked to plant light-colored varieties of chrysanthemum in a garden with white rocks and reflecting pools to reflect as much moonlight as possible. In ancient India, the mogul emperors used fragrant night garden plants like lilium, jasminum, and narcissus to perfume the air.
Night gardens are especially useful to those with busy lives who may not be able to slow down and smell the roses until after the sun has gone down. So if you have a busy schedule, try planting night garden plants so that you have a place to relax after dark when you finally get to slow down.
Those of you with small children may also like to have a night garden as a model of the one in the childrens' TV show In the Night Garden. Your kids can have a calm and peaceful place to meet Iggle piggle, Upsy Daisy and Makka Pakka...at least in their dreams.
