Pediomelum piedmontanum, aka Dixie Mountain breadroot, is a rare North American native baptisia relative, that needs a better PR agent. Found only in three counties near the South Carolina/Georgia line, it occurs in sandy open alkaline sites that are high in Magnesium. In our garden, each 3' tall x 3' wide clump is adorned in June with hundreds of terminal clusters of tiny lavender flowers, creating a lovely effect, as well as being a feast for native bees and butterflies. Thanks to rare plant specialist Doug Walker for sharing cuttings from the Georgia site, so we could make it a 2021 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction. In the face of a constantly changing climate, help us conserve rare plants by spreading them far and wide.
