Nandina domestica is native to warm temperate regions of Japan including southern Honshu, Shikoku, and the Pacific side of Kyushu, as well as mountain regions of China and Japan. It grows along stream sides in montane forests, roadsides, and thickets. It prefers moist, well-drained soils. Nandina sp. thrive in many temperature conditions, and are mildly drought tolerant.
