More Information About Melianthus
Melianthus is a genus of South African woody shrubs of which one, Melianthus major is popular as a garden plant. In warm climates Melianthus will produce dark red flowers on two year old branches, but our Raleigh, NC garden, it is likely to be pinched back to the ground most winters, and thus we'll only rarely see them. This shrub is best treated like a perennial. No matter though as Melianthus is best grown as a foliage plant due to its large, serrated, fern-like leaves that have a nice bluish silver or gray hue.
