We are thrilled to offer a limited number of the very rare orange-flowered Adonis 'Chichibu Beni'. Once thought to be a selection of Adonis amurensis, recent taxonomic work has shown this to be a hybrid between the diploid Adonis multiflora and the tetraploid (4 sets of chromosomes) Adonis ramosa. Like Adonis amurensis, Adonis 'Chichibu Beni' (Chichibu is a city in central Japan and Beni means red) opens as early as late January with semi-double cinnamon-orange flowers atop the dark stems, adorned with unfurling fern-like foliage. It will take several years for these to bulk up into a clump. We have found adonis grow best in moist organic soils.
