More Information About Fatshedera
The genus x Fatshedera is a man-made intergeneric cross between Fatsia japonica 'Moseri' and an unknown Hedera helix cultivar (possibly ssp. hibernica). The original x Fatshedera cross was made in 1910 in at the Liz Freres Nursery at Nantes, France and has never been repeated.
x Fatshedera has a form intermediate between both parents with shiny, leathery, maple tree-sized leaves and a woody stem. There are several variegated Fatshedera selections on the market today, all made from the original cross.
Although best treated like a shrub, Fatshedera can also be easily espaliered (tying or pruning to a frame). Fatshedera prefers partial shade or morning sun and average moisture during the summer to look its best. In fall, Fatshedera will produce terminal umbels of sterile white flowers. x Fatshedera is evergreen where the winter temperatures stay above 5 degrees F. Below that, it will be killed to the ground but will happily re-sprout the following spring. When you are ready to buy a tree ivy for your garden, check out our selection of Fatshedera for sale.
