Calamagrostis

More Information About Calamagrostis

The genus Calamagrostis, comprising 200 species of temperate grasses, is native to North and South America. It is well represented in horticulture by two ornamental species, Calamagrostis brachytricha and Calamagrostis acutiflora. Renowned worldwide as one of the top genera of ornamental grasses, Calamagrostis is hardy in a wide range of climates including marine environments. We are pleased to offer a nice selection of easy-to-grow, deer-resistant Calamagrostis varieties. In 2001, the cultivar, Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster' was named the Perennial Plant of the Year (PPOY) by the Perennial Plant Association.

Like most grasses, Calamagrostis prefers full sun and well-drained, fertile soils. However, this is a flexible group of plants that can tolerate a wide range of growing conditions. Calamagrostis looks great as a specimen plant, a container plant, or used as a vertical accent in a mixed border. Try pairing calamagrostis with other sun-loving flowering perennials such as canna, gaura, and helianthus.
