Borinda is deer-resistant and prefers full or part sun and well-drained, moist soil but is otherwise not too picky. It is a great plant for gardeners who might have an oriental themed garden or who just love bamboo.
More Information About Borinda
Borinda is a small genus of clumping bamboos from the Himalayan plateau countries. They were moved from fargesia and other closely related genera in 1994 by plant taxonomist C.M. Stapleton, but the difference between borinda and the fargesia is slight and can only be seen when the plants are flowering. Borinda species are highly ornamental, fairly cold hardy (they are Himalayan after all), clumpers (pachymorphs) that will not take over your garden, and for a clumping bamboo they are fairly large. As a result, borindas are great bamboos for the Southeast US.
Borinda is deer-resistant and prefers full or part sun and well-drained, moist soil but is otherwise not too picky. Borinda is a great genus for gardeners who might have an oriental themed garden, who want a well-behaved screening plant, who need a great container plant, or who just like bamboo. Combine borinda with other Asian plants such as hosta, brugmansia, athyrium, and liriope.
We strongly recommend that you buy clumping bamboo instead of the more common running bamboo types. The runners can make a nuisance of themselves in your garden and in your neighbors yard too. It can take expensive and time consuming measures to rein in running bamboos. Running bamboos are known to send shoots under roads or houses and pop up 40' away on the other side. What a headache! Plant Delights offers a small, but attractive selection of cold-hardy clumping bamboo for sale including bambusa, borinda, and fargesia.
