More Information About Amaryllids
Sometimes botanists come up with shorthand forms of "official" scientific terms to use in place of longer words. In the case of Amaryllis relatives in the family Amaryllidaceae, botanists use the shortened term "Amaryllids". Other examples of this scientific shorthand are aroids (family araceae) and irids (family iridaceae). Like all plant groups, there are gardeners who collect amaryllids and are always looking for the next rare or unusual amaryllis relative. Amaryllids are a group in tremendous taxonomic flux with few taxonomists agreeing on what is and is not a true amaryllid.
