Sometimes botanists come up with shorthand forms of "official" scientific terms to use in place of longer words. In the case of Amaryllis relatives in the family Amaryllidaceae, botanists use the shortened term "Amaryllids". Other examples of this scientific shorthand are aroids (family araceae) and irids (family iridaceae).
