(syn: Z. umbrosa). This species, subspecies, or whatever your favorite taxonomist calls it, is the wide-leaf form of Z. pumila (floridana) that inhabits the northeastern quadrant of Florida. In the wild, they grow under oaks in very sandy, occasionally flooded soils. The evergreen, 18" tall x 3' wide clumps of thick, glossy, green fern-shaped leaves are adorned with bright brown phallic shaped cones when the clump matures . Gardeners north of Zone 8 should consider these experimental for protected microclimates only.
