(syn: Y. harrimaniae ssp. harrimaniae) This dwarf form of Yucca harrimaniae was given species status in 1998, although there is an ongoing taxonomic war over this plant. Yucca nana is endemic to a small area, around 6,000' elevation, on the Utah/Colorado border, where it can be found growing on sandy/gravel slopes among tall scrubby pines. The compact deer-resistant plants, 1' tall x 1' wide, are composed of narrow green leaves covered in white filaments. When mature, the clumps are topped with 3' flower spikes of white, bell-shaped flowers. This is a superb rock garden plant that deserves to be more widely grown.
