This superb Texas native is one of the best of the ironweed species for the garden and also the earliest to flower. The 2' tall stems are clothed in white hairs, as are the flower buds that form in clusters atop the plant starting in July. The wooly buds open to reveal the typical purple ironweed flowers. V. lindheimeri is great in the front of the border as well as in the rock garden. While they are at home in Texas caliche (Mexican word meaning really crappy alkaline soil), they adapt amazingly well to acidic garden soils. The seed for our offerings is from a population in Comal Co., TX, just north of San Antonio.
