We first saw Tricyrtis 'Fluffy Orchid' at the JC Raulston Arboretum, where it blew us away. This amazing selection is most likely a tetraploid, judging by the massive, 7" long x 3" wide, thickened foliage. Most likely, this is a hybrid between Tricyrtis hirta and Tricyrtis formosana. The 3' tall, upright stalks, as well as the upper leaf axils, are topped, starting for us in mid-October, with clusters of heavily purple spotted flowers. It originated at a small Miami nursery, where all other toad lilies fear to tread, and was purchased by North Florida nurserywoman, Nancy Brown. It was subsequently named and introduced by North Florida plant experts, Gary Knox and Sue Watkins.
