Trachycarpus nanus is one of the rarest of the hardy windmill palms. Our oldest garden plant, which has matured at 3' tall x 4' wide, dates from 2006, but it's been over 15 years since we had any to share. This very rare dwarf windmill palm, with glaucous green foliage, was re-discovered in 1993, by Gibbons and Spanner in Yunnan, China, on dry slopes above 6500' elevation. Trachycarpus nanus doesn't form an above ground trunk. When the plants mature and finally engage in sexual activities, the resulting seeds are held on very upright stalks, unlike typical windmill palms. In two decades, here in Zone 7b/8a, our plants have never shown any winter damage. Supplies are limited, and demand is high, so we don't expect these to last long.
