Here's a native that few people realize is native, and even fewer realize it grows outside a hanging basket. Named after the Swedish botanist Tolmie, Tolmiea menziesii occurs in moist forests and streambanks from Alaska south to northern California. T. 'Cool Gold' was discovered by a hiking Ken Brown of Oregon's Terra Nova Nurseries. The fuzzy, clear gold foliage makes a 15" wide clump. Each leaf forms a small plantlet at the base, which will root when the leaf touches the ground. The spring flower spikes are...shhhh...insignificant, but that's okay as the leaves will do quite well at lighting up the woodland garden.
