Scadoxus multiflorus

(syn: Haemanthus katherinae) This was one of our greatest surprises in our hardiness trials. For 7 years and enduring temperatures down to 0F, the torch lily has returned each year. In late spring, the flower spike emerges from the ground with a tiny reddish bud that grows to 12" tall, then explodes into a 6-8" fuzzy red fireball. After flowering, glossy green strap like leaves emerge from the ground on a short stalk forming a hosta like clump that lasts thru the summer. A bed of torch lilies are sure to cause visitors to do a double take.
