Salvia roemeriana is a charming and very easy-to-grow dwarf North American native (Texas, Mexico) sage. I first caught a glimpse of Roemer's sage on a 1994 expedition to Northern Mexico. This deciduous perennial salvia makes a short rosette of dark green leaves with purple veins. In spring it flowers heavily, topped with 12" spikes of bright crimson-red, tubular flowers...great for low-flying hummingbirds. It has survived 0 degrees F here with no problem and actually reseeds near the original clump, especially in gravelly soils. Good drainage is the key to success.
